Tom Segura Interview
Q: From your earlier Netflix specials to now, how do you think your material has evolved over the last couple of years?
Tom Segura: Just like with anything that you do for a long time, your skills evolve. I think I’ve developed more skills as a comic when it comes to writing and performing. You want to evolve with your life, too. Comics can get stuck in a phase of their life and not talk about how they’re changing. As I get married and have kids, my act is going to inform people of what I do because it’s just the reality of who I am.
Q: Let’s get into the podcast, ‘Your Mom’s House,’ which you co-host with your wife. How did you two come up with the idea and what are some of the crazier topics you’ve tackled on the show?
Tom Segura: [Laughs] That’s a question I don’t know if I can even answer. It came together because of my friend, Joe Rogan, who has this wildly successful podcast. Seven or eight years ago he was encouraging me to do one. I was totally not interested, I had no desire. And then he met my wife at one of the clubs.
He was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Your wife is a comic, too? You have to do a show together.’ So, we tried it loosely for a little while. Then she took over the production of it and I think it really took shape from there. It’s a really silly show. There are some podcasts that tackle real issues; everything from social injustice, economics and the whole political spectrum. But our show is the opposite; our show is an attempt to stay juvenile.
Q: What do you think it is about podcasts that have made it such a successful platform for comedians in particular?
Tom Segura: I think it’s really about just getting to know people genuinely. I’m surprised sometimes, I’ll be on the road and people will come up to me and say really familiar things to me; things about my sister, my dad, then I realize this person has been listening to me talk for years and they know me intimately. They know me actually almost how a friend would know me and I think a lot of people are looking for that.
It’s a connection with someone. The other aspect of it is that it’s similar to the same way streaming services, like Netflix, have exploded in popularity. Not only do they provide content but they provide on-demand access. You can watch what you want when you want. The podcasts are sort of the audio equivalent of that. I think it’s a combination of those things. Getting to know comics like that is a natural thing so really funny people are going to have a fan base.
Q: What would you say is the hardest part about being a comedian?
Tom Segura: Travel is definitely the obvious thing. Also, the challenge of creating new material is kind of the worst and best part at the same time. The grind of it is a struggle, but when you actually land on it, it’s the greatest feeling.
Q: As far as material goes, what resonates with you most? What do you find humor in and know you can deliver well?
Tom Segura: That’s an interesting question because I think ultimately every comic has a wheelhouse of topics. I like joking about inappropriate behavior. As soon as I see something that’s an unconventional, unorthodox way to react or behave, it’s always going to be somewhere in my act. I also find something mundane and stupid, like when people just do stupid things, especially in conversation, I automatically think that I can take that to the stage. If I talk to somebody and they say something dumb, it’s like a tape recorder goes off in my brain.
Q: What do you think the world of comedy needs more of today?
Tom Segura: We definitely need people to go for it still. It’s a weird thing right now where you have people acting like what you’re saying on stage should be taken as if you’re running for Congress or something. This is a performance. We’re going for jokes. So, I think while society is allowing and endorsing others to be sensitive to people and their traumas and their emotions, it’s like they have no place in comedy. I like seeing comedians push back against this.
Q: Lastly, I want to circle back to ‘Disgraceful.’ For people who haven’t seen it yet, what do they need to know about it?
Tom Segura: I really just feel like it’s a good hour. If you like stand-up, it’s worth checking it out. I’m a comic that’s always gone for jokes. I’m a storyteller so if you like funny storytelling, I do a lot of that. I do touch on some of the language of today. So I do address that we’re living through a change, but I make light of it. I poke fun at it. I think that I’m really just a storyteller at heart and there are definitely a number of stories that are in there.
