He played in the National Basketball Association a total of seven seasons. After retiring from basketball, Tolbert became a radio show co-host for the NBC, ESPN, and ABC television networks on KNBR in San Francisco and an NBA commentator. He currently does radio color commentary for all Golden State Warriors home games and select road games with Warriors radio play-by-play announcer Tim Roye. Following high school, he played college basketball at the University of California, Irvine (1983–1985), Cerritos College (1985–86), and the University of Arizona (1986–1988).
While in Arizona, Tolbert played under coach Lute Olson, helping the team make an appearance in the 1988 Final Four. In 1988, he was Charlotte Hornets ‘ second-round draft pick (9th pick, 34th overall). Tolbert spent seven seasons playing for a number of NBA teams, including Charlotte (1988–89, 94–95), the Golden State Warriors (1989–92), the Orlando Magic (1992–93), and He also played for Canarias for a short time in the Spanish League.
Tom joined KNBR in 1996, a local sports radio station based in San Francisco and he’s worked the 3p-7p time slot ever since. Tom also had the fun job of interviewing Warriors head coach Steve Kerr each week during the season, who was his college teammate at Arizona. Tolbert was hired to co-host a radio talk show called The Razor and Mr. T with long-time sports radio host Ralph Barbieri from the Bay Area.
