Tony Meola Soccer & Goalkeeper
He had signed with the U.S. Soccer Federation before the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Following the cup, Meola signed on loan with English club Brighton & Hove Albion where he played eleven games; only two were league games. He gained his first start when he replaced the injured Perry Digweed and promptly won man of the match honors.
On September 14, 1990, Meola was transferred to Watford before moving back to the U.S., which he did when he was unable to renew his work permit due to his inability to gain first-team time with Watford. Meola played for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the American Professional Soccer League.
He shared the goal with Arnie Mausser. On December 14, 1994, he signed with the Buffalo Blizzard of the NPSL in the 1994-1995 indoor season. He became the team’s starting keeper, but on January 31, 1995, he announced that he had taken a lead role in the off-Broadway play Tony and Tina’s Wedding.
He played five more games with the Blizzard before leaving to join the cast on February 16. He was traded to the Kansas City Wizards (with Alexi Lalas for Mark Chung and Mike Ammann) in 1999 but missed most of his first year in the midwest due to injury. Chris Snitko and David Winner backstopped during Meola’s absence.
The team struggled for results and wins with both Winner and Snitko. In 2000, Meola was named League MVP, Goalkeeper of the Year, and MLS Cup MVP as he led Kansas City to the championship. He set a new league record by recording 16 shutouts. Meola was voted into the 2000 MLS All-Star Game playing the first half in goal and made a cameo in the 2nd half up top as a forward.
Meola played for the Wizards through the 2004 MLS season. That year, an injury forced him out of contention. Bo Oshoniyi took over the goalkeeping position, although Meola recorded a shutout in the Wizards’ U.S. Open Cup final win over the Chicago Fire, and Meola was not asked back for next season, instead of stuck with Oshoniyi as the starting goalkeeper.
Tony Meola Jets
Tony was made a placekicker and he was scheduled to be introduced as a member of the Jets at a news conference today. “We gave Tony quite an extensive workout late last week and were really impressed by his leg strength and accuracy,” Jets general manager Dick Steinberg said.
“We feel that with experience and some technique work, he has the potential to be a solid NFL placekicker.” If so, Meola will have to beat out the most accurate kicker in NFL history, Nick Lowery, who left the Kansas City Chiefs and signed with the Jets earlier this year as a free agent.
Tony led Virginia to the NCAA title in 1989 and played for Brighton of the English second division. He also played baseball for Virginia and was drafted by the New York Yankees as a center fielder. The Jets signed Team USA’s goalie Tony Meola, a New Jersey native, as a placekicker.
They had recently signed Nick Lowery, who at that point was perhaps the greatest kicker in NFL history from a statistical standpoint. Lowery was 38 years old, however, at this point, and his leg strength was diminished. This was the season when the NFL moved kickoffs from the 35-yard line to the 30, putting a greater emphasis on leg strength for kickoffs.
Maybe Meola could even work on his field goals in low-pressure practice situations and take over for Lowery when he retired in a year or two the Jets thought. The Jets brought him aboard hoping his big leg could allow him to stick as a kickoff specialist and gain field position that might be lost if Lowery handled kickoffs.
Tony had never kicked a football on any level before, and it showed. His technique was shaky. As a result, he couldn’t generate enough hang time on his kickoffs to make him effective. He also earned the nickname Captain Hook for his tendency to send his kicks wildly off target.
