In 1966, Van Devere began her acting career in New York City, honing her skills at the Actors Studio. She, alongside fellow actor Scott Cunningham, co-founded the Free Southern Theater, bringing live plays to indigent African Americans in the Southern United States who had not experienced theater before. Later, they established the Poor People’s Theater in New York City, staging productions in various locations, including churches and schools.
Van Devere gained prominence as the original Meredith Lord in the soap opera One Life to Live in 1968. Using her income from the show, she supported the Poor People’s Theater Company.
