Tom Heaton Biography
Tom Heaton born Thomas David Heaton, is an English professional footballer. He plays as a goalkeeper for English club Burnley and the English national team. He was born on 15 April 1986 in Chester, Cheshire, England.
Tom Heaton began his professional career with Manchester United. While at Old Trafford he enjoyed numerous loan spells at Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff City, QPR, Rochdale and Wycombe Wanderers.
He finally left United in 2010 in pursuit of regular first team football and spent two years back at Cardiff, making 40 appearances and starring in their 2011/12 League Cup campaign.
Heaton saved two penalties against Crystal Palace in the semi-final and another from Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard in the penalty shoot-out final defeat at Wembley.
Heaton then moved on to Bristol City in the summer of 2012, but was unable to halt the Robins’ relegation to League One.
He initially signed a two-year deal, and enjoyed a hugely successful first season at Turf Moor in 2013/14 as the Clarets gained promotion to the Premier League. A string of impressive displays the following season landed him the 2014/15 Players’ Player of the Year award.
The former England U21 international capped a whirlwind season by signing an extended three-year deal in July, 2015.
Following the departure of Jason Shackell to Derby County, Dyche named Heaton his captain for the 2015/16 campaign, a season which saw the goalkeeper lift the title and play an integral role in the Clarets’ promotion to the Premier League.
Heaton made 48 appearances in all competitions during an historic season, keeping 19 clean sheets in the process.
Heaton was rewarded for his consistency with a first England call up in the summer of 2015, and in the summer of 2016, he became the first Clarets’ player since Martin Dobson in 1974 to earn a full England cap.
Following his England debut, he celebrated returning to Turf Moor for the start of the 2016/17 Premier League season by signing a new and improved four-year deal, trying him to the club until the summer of 2020.
Heaton made 36 appearances in arguably his best season at Turf Moor in 2016/17 as he played a major role in helping Burnley sustain their Premier League status.
An outstanding performance against his former club at Old Trafford earned the highest praise from Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel. The great Dane described Heaton’s save to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic as “one of the best ever in the Premier League.”
Heaton also retained his place in the England squad throughout 2016/17, earning his second cap as a substitute in a friendly against Spain at Wembley and a third against France.
Heaton also topped off a memorable domestic season by winning Burnley’s Player of the Year Award.
The stopper begain the 2017/18 campaign as number one, but a dislocated shoulder, sustained at home to Crystal Palace in September, kept him out of action until April.
Heaton was unable to regain his starting slot before the end of the campaign but was brought back into the England fold by being put on stand-by for the 2018 World Cup Finals.

Tom Heaton Injury
Heaton had been out since he injured his shoulder in September 2017 but he played in a training ground game against Blackpool in February 2018. Burnley manager Sean Dyche therefore was spared making a tricky choice between England international Heaton and Nick Pope, whose impressive deputising performances has also seen him tipped for a call-up to the national side.
Asked if the time had now come for him to choose between the keepers for the No 1 jersey, Dyche said: “Tom is old enough and wise enough to know what he needs as much as I know what he needs. He will certainly let us know when he is ready.
“He is certainly training very well, he played very well the other day, and he took care of the simple stuff. Keepers who do that are usually good keepers and he does that very well.
“He has trained well over the last period and is certainly coming back towards the thinking, but I still think he will let us know when he is fully ready and he knows the form of Popey as well.
“He knows he has got to deal with that as well but, first things first, he has to make sure he is absolutely 100 per cent fit and he is very, very close.”

Heaton has become the first Burnley player since Martin Dobson in 1974 to be named in a full England squad after being picked for games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia next month.
Wife Taralee shared the happy news after Heaton was tipped off by boss Sean Dyche at a player of the year function but then sworn to secrecy until Thursday’s official squad announcement.
But since then they have been busy changing their summer schedule.
“There have been a few changes to the summer plans,’ he said. “But I wouldn’t have a summer to be involved in this.
“I had a week in Portugal which I am coming back a couple of days early from and 10 days in South Africa which I will be flying out a bit late for.
“But it’s worth it. I would cancel the whole lot to be honest – but she doesn’t know that.”
Heaton’s call-up is a reward for a highly impressive season with the Clarets, even though he couldn’t help them avoid the drop from the Premier League.
It also completes a remarkable turn-around from two years ago when he had just been relegated to League One with Bristol City.
But Heaton insists he always kept faith in his ability and is now looking forward to working alongside Joe Hart and Rob Green and pushing for a possible England debut.
Heaton, who will bow out of the top flight with Burnley at Aston Villa tomorrow, added: “I have been fortunate enough to work with Joe before with the under-21s and growing up when he was with City and I was at Manchester United we played against each other a few times.
“I think he is carrying the torch for goalkeepers around the world. He has been fantastic over a number of years and I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“He is the standard and I will be looking to get to that. And I think Rob Green has been outstanding.
“When we played QPR at Loftus Road earlier in the season he produced one of the best seasons I have ever seen live and I think that was the icing on the cake on a fantastic season.”
