Tom Sturridge Career
Sturridge began his career as a child actor, appearing in his father’s 1996 television adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, which also starred his mother. He made a comeback in 2004 with Vanity Fair and Being Julia. He portrayed William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke in BBC4’s A Waste of Shame in 2005.
In 2006, he starred as Nigel in the psychological thriller Like Minds, also known as Murderous Intent. It tells the story of two boys, Alex (Eddie Redmayne) and Nigel, who are forced to share a room, much to Alex’s chagrin.
Alex is both horrified and fascinated by the ritual-influenced deaths that begin to occur around them, and when Nigel is murdered, Alex is held responsible. Originally, he was cast as the lead in the sci-fi trilogy Jumper.
However, two months into production, New Regency and 20th Century Fox replaced him with the “more prominent” Hayden Christensen, fearing the risk of spending over $100 million on a film starring an unknown actor.
In 2009, he co-starred with Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the Richard Curtis comedy The Boat That Rocked (known as Pirate Radio in the United States). In September 2009, he made his stage debut in Punk Rock, a newly dramatized play by Simon Stephens at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, as a character loosely modeled after the Columbine High School shooters.
He was nominated for Most Outstanding Newcomer in the 2009 Evening Standard Awards for that performance, and he won the 2009 Critics’ Circle Theatre Award in the same category.
He co-starred with Rachel Bilson in the 2011 indie romance Waiting for Forever. In Walter Salles’ 2012 film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, he played a role loosely based on poet Allen Ginsberg.
In the spring of 2013, he starred in the Broadway play Orphans as Phillip, a developmentally disabled character, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.
Tom Sturridge Sandman
He played Winston Smith in the Broadway production of 1984 in 2017. Sturridge received a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play in 2019 for his performance in the Broadway play Sea Wall/A Life, in which he co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal.
