Tye Tribbett Interview on switching labels, losing his brother as his musical director, favorite album ,unique take on life, style and music.
Christopher Heron: I think the first time I discovered your music ministry was way back in 2001 on the The Prince Of Egypt Soundtrack.
Tye Tribbett: (Laughs) Yes…yes. That was a long time ago. (Laughs)
Christopher Heron: Your first single – If He Did It Before (Same God) – certainly set the tone for the rebirth of Tye Tribbett and your Grammy award winning album, Greater Than. Is it fair to say that you were returning to the sound of the old Tye Tribbett or is Greater Than a whole new Tye Tribbett?
Tye Tribbett: It’s a little bit of both. The hook in the song…”If He did before, He can do it again, same God right now, same God back then”…I’ve had for six or seven years. It came in a concert. We’ve been rockin’ that hook for seven years. In 2012, I put verses to go with the hook. So, it’s old Tye and new Tye all mixed in. The song was the perfect introduction to this new season in my life.
Christopher Heron: The album – Greater Than – was a perfect segue from Fresh, your previous album release. Not only did Greater Than bring back that familiar Live sound you capitalized on but it also featured a cast of very talented singers that atleast sounded like the old Greater Anointing who mimicked Tye’s every move. Were you able to bring back your cast of singers or are these vocalists a whole new set of people?
Tye Tribbett: Oh no. It’s all new people. They’re all new background singers, except for one, my baby sister. The band is also different. The sound of Greater Anointing was amazing, revolutionary but I believe God put a specific sound in me, so whoever is with me, will produce the same sound.
Christopher Heron: You mentioned that you have a whole new band working with you. Do you miss working with and having the contributions of your old musical director and brother, Thaddaeus Tribbett, on this project, Greater Than?
Tye Tribbett: Oh yes! It wasn’t just a musical contribution. It was a relationship. It was very personal. So, of course I miss him. He’s been doing greather things, working with Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Christopher Heron: Speaking of new relationships. You’re no longer with Columbia / Sony, who has been responsible for all your previous album releases, besides Greater Than.
Tye Tribbett: The support is different. The push is different because it’s a Gospel label, even though they partner with a mainstream label. So, I’m still kind of under a mainstream label, again. But the support, through conversations and planning has felt very different and I appreciated that.
Christopher Heron: Making a move from one label to another can be tricky, especially when you have lots of options, as you obviously did. How does an artist like Tye Tribbett decide which label, for instance RCA Inspiration, Light, Tyscot, Malaco, Entertainment One, which of these is the best fit, as an artist and which label will provide the best support to achieve success?
Tye Tribbett: To be honest, RCA Inspiration wasn’t in place yet when I was making my decision (laughs). All of those labels are great. We had meetings with many of those labels.
Christopher Heron: Tye, you can hang your hat on any of your previous releases. Life, Victory, Stand Out, Fresh and now your Grammy award winning album, Greater Than are all very special in an artistic sense; but I’m curious to know which one of your former releases is your favorite album to date?
Tye Tribbett: To me, Stand Out, was the biggest one to date. Greater Than will ultimately be my biggest work but Stand Out was special.
Christopher Heron: What was the catalyst for the title of your latest project, Greater Than?
Tye Tribbett: Simply put, God is greater than anything. 1 John 4:4 says, “Greater Is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” I asked myself the question, “Why does the scripture say ‘greater is He’ and not say, ‘great is He’”? So, what the scripture is saying is that he who is in the world is great but our God is greater.
Christopher Heron: You’re not only an award winning recording artist but the director of the Rejoice Choir atEbenezer AME Church in Fort Washington, Maryland. Are you most comfortable performing on stage as an artist or leading the sound of worship with the Youth Choir at Ebenezer?
Tye Tribbett: I would say as a worship leader or just being a worshipper. I do believe that everything you do should be for the Kingdom, which is why I appreciate personalities like DeVon Franklin or Tyler Perry, because everything you do should reflect the Kingdom.
Christopher Heron: On a more serious matter, many of your closest fans and people in your social circle are prayerful that with time and prayers, there has been healing in your family and in your personal life. Have you fully recovered from the events made public years ago?
Tye Tribbett: A lot of the blogs were blasting a lot of the negative things in the past but none of them are blasting that we’re doing fine today. People are questioning, “How are you and your wife?” No one is taking pictures of us eating at the mall, laughing together. We’re doing great. Thank you for asking.
Christopher Heron: On a lighter note, let’s talk about your constant evolution of style. Where does that inspiration to dress in such a distinctive, colorful and trendsetting way come from?
Tye Tribbett: (Laughs) I have a vocalist in the group. Her name is Mumen Ngenge. Everyone calls her ‘Mookie’. She comes up with some crazy ideas for style for the ladies and I come up with what we’re going to do with the guys in the group.
Christopher Heron: Finally, with those who have yet to discover this gem of an album, what is that message or that lasting impression you’re hoping to make through, Greater Than?
Tye Tribbett: Oh my Lord! I hope you make it to the last track, exhale and say, “God is Greater Than…” I hope your stress is diminished, your feelings of loneliness is diminished. I pray that your cancer dries up, every disease disappears. He’s Greater Than all of that. Whether it’s depression, whatever it is loneliness, He will trump whatever it is you’re facing, because He is Greater Than…
