Vera Lynn Biography
Vera Lynn born as Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ is a British singer of traditional popular music, songwriter and actress, whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during the Second World War. She is widely known as “the Forces’ Sweetheart” for giving outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India, and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA).
The songs most associated with her are “We’ll Meet Again”, “The White Cliffs of Dover”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “There’ll Always Be an England”. She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the UK and the US and recording such hits as “Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart” and her UK number-one single “My Son, My Son”.
Her last single, “I Love This Land”, was released to mark the end of the Falklands War. In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart, with compilation album We’ll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn. Lynn also scored a number one in 2014, when she was 97, with the collection Vera Lynn: National Treasure, and remains the oldest person to top the album charts.
Further, she released the compilation album of hits Vera Lynn 100 in 2017, to commemorate her centennial year, and it was a number-3 hit, making her the first centenarian performer to have an album in the charts. She has devoted much time and energy to charity work connected with ex-servicemen, disabled children, and breast cancer. She is held in great affection by veterans of the Second World War and in 2000 was named the Briton who best exemplified the spirit of the 20th century.

Vera met her husband and manager, Harry Lewis, in 1939 while singing with the Bert Ambrose Orchestra. He was a very good clarinetist and tenor saxophonist. She thought him terribly good looking, with a fine head of hair, even if he was rather short. His tough, Jewish, East End background had taught him how to stick up for himself and for those, he cared about.

Vera’s daughter, Virginia, was born in March 1946. Vera went back to work 11 months later, but brought her up herself as much as possible. If she had to work in the evenings, she would tell her so, she thought that was kinder but always stressed that she would see her in the morning.
Virginia is in her 70s now, but she still calls her Mamma. They have always got on, but when Harry died in 1998 they became even closer. Vera didn’t have any more children because she couldn’t have continued working and she was the main breadwinner. But although they are small in number, family life has always been hugely important to her.

Dame Vera Lynn used her 103rd birthday to call on the British public to find “moments of joy” during these “hard times”. The London-born singer marked the special occasion with a new video for her wartime classic We’ll Meet Again. It features archive footage of her performing the anthem alongside new visuals, and words tackling current themes such as the Covid-19 outbreak.
In the video, she urges the nation to “keep smiling and keep singing”. Dame Vera says in a voiceover: “We are facing a very challenging time at the moment, and I know many people are worried about the future. “I’m greatly encouraged that despite these struggles, we have seen people joining together. “Music is so good for the soul, and during these hard times we must all help each other to find moments of joy.”

Vera nearly died before she got started. When she was a toddler, Vera fell ill with diphtheritic croup and was taken to an isolation unit. One of her earliest memories is of being on her own in a tent surrounded by steaming kettles. Vera was discharged after three months, just in time for her third birthday. As she had missed Christmas, Vera had her Christmas and birthday all in one, in March.
