She made several appearances in the television series Leave It to Beaver (as Beaver’s classmates Violet Rutherford and, later, Peggy MacIntosh), as well as episodes of One Step Beyond “The Haunting” (1960) and The Twilight Zone “I Sing the Body Electric” (1961).     She appeared in the episodes “The Silence of Good Men” and “My Name is Judith, I’m Lost, You See” of NBC’s medical drama The Eleventh Hour in 1963. Cartwright appeared in the critically acclaimed films The Children’s Hour (1961) and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963).

    She was cast in The Birds alongside her television father from Leave It to Beaver, Richard Deacon, though the two did not appear on screen together.

    She co-starred with Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, Darby Hinton, Ed Ames, and Dallas McKennon in the first two seasons of NBC’s Daniel Boone, from 1964 to 1966.

    She received a regional Emmy Award for her performance in the television film Tell Me Not in Mournful Numbers (1964). Cartwright found success with the films Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Alien (1979), the latter earning her a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.
