Van played as a professional tour tennis player, who earned the ‘Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Rookie of the Year award’ in 1979. The gained much fame in his professional tennis career when he defeated John McEnroe in 1981. He also defeated the other two top ten world-ranked pros, which made him win the Seiko World Super Tennis tournament in Tokyo.
His Tennis career-high ranking in singles was reached on 11 February 1982 which was World No. 26. He also reached the third round of the US Open twice, in 1982 and 1983, and Wimbledon once, in 1985 for his singles.
