Career

From 1975 to 1977, Wayne took on the coaching role for the U18s Queensland Police Academy in the Brisbane local competition. During this time, he also coached the Police Academy Cadet Team in matches against the NSW Police Academy. In 1986, Bennett assumed the position of coach for the Queensland State of Origin team, succeeding Des Morris.

In 1987, Bennett transitioned to the NSWRL’s Winfield Cup Premiership, where he became the co-coach of the Canberra Raiders alongside then-Australian team coach Don Furner. In his first year, Bennett led the Queensland side to victory in the 1987 State of Origin series. By the end of the 1987 NSWRL season, he and Furner guided the Raiders to their first Grand Final, ultimately losing to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 18–8.

Bennett made a return to coach the Brisbane Broncos for the 2015 NRL season, leading the team to a second-place finish in the regular season and reaching the grand final. The Broncos, however, were defeated 17-16 by the North Queensland Cowboys in golden point extra time, marking Bennett’s first grand final defeat. He continued coaching the Broncos until the conclusion of the 2018 season.
