Will was born on July 16, 1967, in Irvine, California, United States. He is the eldest son of teacher Betty Kay Overman (mother), and Roy Lee (father) who played saxophone and keyboards for the Righteous Brothers. Will at first attended Turtle Rock Elementary then thereafter attended Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, both in Irvine.

He also attended University High School in Irvine where he was a kicker for the school’s varsity football team. He was also on the soccer team and captain of the basketball team as well as serving on the student council. He then attended the University of Southern California (USC), where he majored in sports journalism.

Rise to Fame

Ferrell performed as a sports broadcaster on local cable before studying comedy and acting after graduating in 1990. After a year of training with the Los Angeles improv comedy group the Groundlings, he became a member of the company, and in 1995 he was invited to join the television sketch show Saturday Night Live (SNL).
