Wilmer Flores Career
Wilmer Flores Mets
Wilmer gained promotion to the Mets on August 6, on the day of his 22nd birthday. Pitcher Bobby Parnell was placed on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck to make room for Wilmer on the roster. He made his debut that day against the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field going 0-for-4 at the plate and committing an error in the sixth inning in what would be a 3–2 Mets win.
Wilmer notched his first professional major league hit on August 7, a single in the bottom of the second inning off the Rockies pitcher Jhoulys Chacín. He hit a base clearing double-off pitcher Manny Corpas for his first three major league RBIs, in the bottom of the eighth innings, with bases loaded. The Mets went on to win 5–0.
Rumors spread during the Padres-Mets game on July 29, 2015, that Wilmer had been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, together with pitcher Zack Wheeler, for Carlos Gómez. Despite the reports, Wilmer remained in the game and was visibly emotional when he returned to the field as fans started to give him a standing ovation.
Wilmer later explained his disappointment in learning that he would be leaving the only baseball organization he’d ever known. After the game, however, General Manager Sandy Alderson told the media that no trade had occurred, saying “social media got ahead of the facts.”
Mets’ manager Terry Collins also told the media that he knew nothing about the potential trade and had told Wilmer while the events played out, “Listen, I don’t know what’s going on, but you’ve got a game to play, let’s play baseball.” Later, it was reported that the Mets backed out of the trade after concern about Gómez’s physical as a medical report showed an issue with his hip.
2018
Wilmer hit a walk-off home run to give the Mets a win against the Brewers on April 15, 2018. This was his third professional walk-off home run. He drove in the winning run against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Mets a 4–3 victory on June 26. He had driven in the Mets’ first two runs as well earlier in the game.
Wilmer’s game-winner was his 9th walk-off RBI of his young career. He tied David Wright for the most walk-off RBIs in Mets’ history. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 9, he hit a pinch-hit walk-off home run, breaking Wright’s record for the most walk-off RBI of any player in the Mets franchise history.
Wilmer became a free agent at the end of the 2018 season when the Mets did not tender his contract. Consequently, he was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Wilmer Flores News
Wilmer said that he misses the Mets and New York, but is happy with his new life in Arizona with the Diamondbacks. Sure, living in the desert makes it harder to get whatever kind of food he wants at 3 a.m., a luxury to which he became accustomed in the Big Apple. But traffic isn’t nearly as bad and, let’s be honest, rent is far more reasonable.
“I’m getting a bigger house for what I was paying,” Flores said, laughing. “A much bigger house.”
Lifestyle perks aside, Wilmer also is employed by a team that wants him. The Mets non-tendered Flores, their longtime utility infielder/pinch hitter, in November, thus making him a free agent one year ahead of schedule.
Wilmer Flores Diamondbacks Contract
After the end of the 2018 season, the Mets did not tender Wilmer’s contract which made him a free agent. The Diamondbacks formally announced the signing of Flores on a one-year contract on January 21, 2019.
Wilmer’s contract guarantees him $4.2million. He will earn a $3.75 million base salary and have a $500 thousand buyout on a $6 million option. The contract also contains a club option for a second season.
