Xherdan Shaqiri, Liverpool’s Lost, Game-Changing Talent Waiting To Find His Forever Home
Time is running out for Xherdan Shaqiri to deliver on the promise he showcased during his teenage years. The Swiss powerhouse turns 28 in October and his last league start for Liverpool arrived in January in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City. Shaqiri is no stranger to turning out of one of Europe’s elite having already played for FC Bayern and Inter. With both clubs, he started well, had the backing of the fans but ultimately failed to earn the trust of the manager. Injuries played a part, especially during his time in Bavaria, and, eventually, he was just phased out and sold on.
Back in December, he was the king of the KOP after coming off the bench to net a double in the 3-1 win over Manchester United. He was a genuine game-changer, and he was proving those who doubted him wrong while emphatically answering the countless people who had questioned the Reds for signing him. However, in the space of a month, he went from the talk of the town to something of an afterthought.
The easy explanation for this would be to claim Jurgen Klopp just didn’t have faith in his No. 23. That the German tactician had given him a chance in the first half of the season, but he just hadn’t seen enough to convince him that the former Stoke City attacker could be trusted to carry out an instruction.
At times, Shaqiri did look like a dog on a leash eager to be free in an open field. He left holes in the Liverpool team, and he started fires other players needed to put out. But the left-footed maestro made things happen. There was a risk of starting him but his ability to create something out of nothing meant it was one worth taking.
In normal circumstances, Shaqiri probably goes on to be heavily involved during the second half of the campaign.
The FC Basel academy graduate was acclimatizing to the rigours of the Liverpool system, all while impacting what was going on in the final third. For context, up until the turn of the year, Shaqiri was averaging more possession regains in the middle and attacking thirds per 90 than Sadio Mane. He’d almost doubled what he averaged at Stoke the year prior to the move.
In fact, during that period, the Liverpool No. 23 out-scored Mane on a per 90 basis and had a better assist per game average. His underlying numbers weren’t as good as the Senegal international, but he was still averaging 0.47 expected goals and assists.
