Yvette Monreal Interview
Yvette Monreal Interview On Her Role as Reagan on Faking It
I guess you knew Reagan was a lesbian when you auditioned for Faking It. Was it a problem for you to accept a gay role? Do you think this is always a problem for young actors or does everyone care less about it now?
Not at all. In reality, it was great. Being able to play a role that supported the LGBT community gave me a real sense of pride and I was really happy to have the role. Being gay is more accepted now than twenty years ago. In addition, a series shows that being different is cool gives some people the self-confidence they needed to be themselves. I think everyone lives it in a different way, but I know it was not a problem for me at all. I wanted to do it and my parents really support me in my work so when I told them, they were happy for me.
Did you have to do some kind of alchemy test with Rita Volk (Amy)? Did they tell you to go slow, so that you would blow up the universe with your alchemy?
In fact, they wanted to have a glimpse of the alchemy that could be had together. When we did a test, I was a little nervous because one of the notes they gave me was written: “You do not have to kiss her, but if it happens naturally we will not stop you. At that moment, I thought, “Hey, does the kiss end the affair? [Laughs] I was nervous because I really wanted the role, but at the same time, I did not want to force things. In the end, I just let myself go, everything happened as it should have happened and they loved it.
How does Reagan’s personal style influence yours? Would you like to poke him a lot of his outfits?
Reagan and I have a slightly different style. we really like all his bracelets and rings, I also love shoes and leggings she wears and I went to buy boots similar to hers, I really fell in love! I would like to steal ALL of his pairs of shoes. She has a very good taste for shoes.
In your opinion, the whole story of the triangle (or square now) in love is written in advance or the writers do it evolve over the reactions of the actors and the public?
I like to think that screenwriters make it evolve according to the reactions of the actors and the audience but, at the same time, they may already have an idea of where the story is supposed to go.
Karmy or Reamy?
Reamy without a doubt!
I do not know the age difference between you and Rita, but what do you think of the concerns about Amy’s age difference with Reagan? Is this something that will be treated?
I think in Texas the average age difference is three years. I’m not sure this is treated. I know that everything that happens in the series is much studied by the writers and that they always have a reason to do what they do. So it is certain that the age difference is not there by chance.
Speaking of worries, now that the truth between Amy and Liam has been revealed, we can assume that Reagan will discover it too, right? Will this reinforce his concerns that this is just a “phase”?
I believe that the truth always ends up being discovered, but I’m like everyone else: I’m waiting in stress to see what will happen to the Reamy.
Her fear that it’s just a phase and the fact that her ex has left her for a boy will undoubtedly amplify her uncertainties if she ever finds out that Amy has slept with Liam. Reagan has already struggled with the story of fake lesbians. Once again, Reagan has already been heartbroken and she gives herself completely. In episode eight of season two, the confrontation between Amy and Reagan confirms that if she falls in love with her, Amy will be there to catch her and vice versa. I must say that Amy shows Reagan wonderfully that she has real feelings for her and that this relationship is not just a phase.
Before joining the series, what did you know about LGBT stories from Faking It – bi phobia problems at the lesbian DJ snapshot (Samantha Ronson and Carmen of The L Word being the first examples)?
I knew this before Faking It . However, I can say that I became more aware of some of the problems with the show, which is great! Fortunately, most of the time, I was surrounded by people very open to others. In the end, everyone has to live their own life without worrying about who does what. It’s easier said than done, but it’s true.
What was your favorite scene to shoot for now?
My favorite scene was episode six. It was fun, there was good energy on the set, it was great! All the imagination they put in setting up trays simply with what they have is great; they completely transform the space! I also loved the concert Fifth Harmony, they were adorable!
Who is the funniest actor offshoot?
Outside shooting? Michael Willett is hilarious! In episode seven, at the dinner scene, he told me a story that made me cry with laughter when it was such an intense and serious scene. In the end, I did not know how to stop laughing between shots! I would have preferred not to hear this story, my makeup was starting to flow. But it was funny! I had to think of something sad to stop me.
