Ace Young American Idol
Young auditioned for American Idol in Denver, Colorado, after spending over four years in Los Angeles without a record deal. In his televised audition, he sang Westlife’s “Swear it Again.” Brett Young was introduced, with the name “Ace” in quotation marks.
Later, he told producers that he preferred the name Ace, and he was no longer referred to as Brett on the show. Young made it through Hollywood Week and sang “Father Figure” by George Michael for his live Top 24 performance. He also sang “Butterflies,” a song by Michael Jackson.
There was a brief controversy during the week that featured Queen’s music and the band’s surviving members as mentors. The editing of Young’s pre-performance package by American Idol made it appear as if he had offended Brian May and the rest of the band by suggesting a change in the arrangement of “We Will Rock You.”
May defended Young a few days later in a blog post, clarifying that he and the band felt their mentoring session was a productive exchange of ideas for the song’s arrangement.
The theme for the week Young was eliminated was “Songs from the Great American Songbook,” with Rod Stewart serving as mentor. Young performed “That’s All.” For this performance, he changed his appearance, slicking his hair back and dressing up in a suit and tie.
He received mixed reviews from the judges and was joined by Chris Daughtry and Paris Bennett in the bottom 3.
