Alida Donnelly Got Up Close With The Sport Of Kings
Falconry is one of the many activities at The Greenbrier Resort. The resort uses any type of predatory bird for Falconry, like an eagle, falcons, hawks, and the unexpected owl. At the Greenbrier, they use Harris hawks and a variety of falcons. It is also known as the sport of kings since it began in the third millennium B.C. “It’s a unique activity here. And basically, a lot of people have never been exposed to falconry. They may have read about it or might have been exposed to it in history class, but we kind of put you on a close and personal basis with these birds, ” Cody Morgan, Falconeer at the Greenbrier, said. Like most people, I’m not a fan of flying objects near my head so there was plenty of flinching and bobbing. As predatory birds, they have great sight. “In your birds’ minds, things are simple. Saw it, chased it, caught it, ate something. I no longer see something, ” Morgan added. By the end of my lesson, I was ready for the bird to land on me. Not everyone has to if someone is afraid of birds. “Well if you’re afraid of birds then I don’t know. We’ll work with most people even if they are afraid of birds. You know if you don’t want to get close and personal, and they don’t want to hold a bird, they don’t have to hold a bird,” Morgan said.

Princeton businesses cleaning up after flooding
Floodwaters can wreak havoc anywhere, especially in areas that do not flood regularly. One strong thunderstorm remained over central Mercer County Sunday night, dumping significant rainfall. According to Princeton Fire Chief, Chad Bailey, the Princeton Fire Department responded to 14 calls Sunday night, and some were water rescues. “Basically we had a couple of different times where people tried to go through the water in their cars and got stranded in their vehicles. We did have one mobile home that was surrounded by water that had covered a couple of cars that were sitting beside the mobile home. We did have to go in and actually help them out and assist them out of the house, ” Bailey said. Businesses near Mercer street do not typically flood, but this storm was different. Gail Smith, the owner of Pet Zone Grooming, said her store saw multiple inches after the heavy rain. “Apparently, we got about five to seven inches of rain overnight. The way the streets are laid out, I guess the water just rushed down the streets. The drains couldn’t handle it, so it just came rushing past the shop here. It came in the front door and then the side door. We got flooded. We ended up with six inches inside the shop,” Smith explained. When five inches of rain fell in a torrential downpour Sunday night, numerous businesses near Mercer Street woke up to mud and water inside their doors. At Pet Zone Grooming, Smith said employees were already at work cleaning up the flood debris on Monday.
