Witsel started playing for clubs on 17 September 2006 when he was aged 17. He made his debut with Standard Liège during a game against FC Brussels. His time with the club was reduced when he broke Marcin Wasilewski‘s leg by stamping on his ankle during the match between Anderlecht and Standard.
In July 2011, Witsel signed a five-year deal with the Portuguese club, Benfica, including a € 40 million buyout agreement. Benfica reached the final on April 14 against Gil Vicente and Witsel was awarded the Man of the Match award as Benfica claimed a 2-1 victory in their fourth Taça da Liga title.
On 3 September 2012, Witsel signed a five-year contract with Zenit Saint Petersburg for €40 million. He played his first game with Zenit Saint Petersburg at the Russian Premier League 11 days after he signed a contract with them.
Five years later, in 2017, Witsel moved to the Chinese club, Tianjin Quanjian. The professional footballer scored the Tianjin Quanjian’s first-ever goal in the Chinese Super League during a 1–1 draw with Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.
Recently, in August 2018, Witsel signed for the Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund, on a four-year contract which will expire on 30 June 2022.
Internationally, he played for the under-21 team in 2007 winning nine caps. He also aided his side to reach the semi-finals of the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
His senior side international debut was on 26 March 2008 during a friendly match against Morocco. The match ended up in a loss of 1–4 but Witsel scored his first goal for Belgium.
Witsel was included in Belgium’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2014 on 13 May 2014. During the team’s 2-1 win against Algeria, he started in midfield. Besides, he appeared at UEFA Euro 2016 still with the Belgian Squad.
