MercyMe Bart Millard MercyMe, Career
While in high school, Millard aspired to become a professional football player, a dream which ceased to exist when he wounded both ankles at a high school football tournament. As an option, Millard joined choir as an elective. His father, Arthur Wesley Millard Jr., died of cancer on Nov. 11, 1991, during Bart’s first year of college, his youth pastor requested him to serve with the church’s youth group worship band.
Millard took the opportunity and operated as the video and sound engineer for the group. James (Jim) Bryson used to play the piano as a band member of that church, he later went on to play with Millard and the worship band on a tour to Switzerland. This tour motivated Millard to try a full-time musical career.
Millard with two of his friends, Michael John Scheuchzer and James Phillip Bryson moved to Oklahoma City and began MercyMe. Since it’s inception, the band has recorded six independent albums, two exclusive albums, nine studio albums, two Christmas albums, and one compilation album.
Millard made a commitment to his grandmother to write and record a hymns album for her to listen before she died, which he faithfully honored with Hymned No. 1, and he afterward told the story of how he was motivated by his grandmother’s faith. Millard recorded the second of his two hymn albums because he realized that the church he used to attend did not sing hymns, and he desired his children to grow up in the knowledge of hymns.
Millard stated that his father profoundly inspired him in his musical path with respect to the hymns albums, drawing especially on Willie Nelson and Louie Prima. He told that these impacts would not be relevant for MercyMe, as MercyMe is similar to Coldplay, while these hymned efforts are more in the style of Frank Sinatra.
Millard stated that he started his solo effort in order to give expression to musical styles that would not have been fit with MercyMe. He also told that they sang a Hank Williams song called “I Saw the Light” in his church growing up.
The title of Hymned Again is a “tongue-in-cheek” connecting to the first album. His debut album was an attempt to make songs that he did not especially care about, and the second album was produced to attain a Kansas City swing/shuffle mood in the style of Louie Prima, Harry Connick Jr., and Jamie Cullum, which is what was accomplished.
According to Greer, this album was very implicative of She by Connick, which was made five or six times according to Millard. He told that he achieved this by listening to a pile of albums by these composers. He also told the songs on the album Hymned Again were in the tradition of the Great Revival era musically, but that it was not done on purpose.
Millard stated that the only original song on the album, labeled “Jesus Cares for Me”, was composed solely by Thad Cockrell, a song which according to the musician “could’ve been written 50, 60 years ago.” Millard tensely invited Vince Gill to participate on the album. On the topic of another “Hymned” effort, Millard replied, “Man, I hope so.”
Millard is starred as a singer on “I See Love,” a 2004 song by Third Day and Steven Curtis Chapman. He is also starred as a backing singer on Phil Wickham’s 2009 song “Safe.”
