He was an Australian film critic and film historian, radio and television presenter, journalist, author and lecturer best known for presenting a synopsis of Hollywood films in Australia.

He specialized in the Classical Hollywood cinema, and his favorite film was Gone with the Wind. He was well known for his association with Network 10, presenting Bill Collins’ Golden Years of Hollywood for fifteen years, and later with Foxtel, presenting movies on the cable channel FOX Classics from 1995 to 2018.
Collins began his 55-years-long television career talking about film appreciation on the ABC’s Roundabout program in 1963. He went on to work as a movie presenter at the Nine, Seven, and Ten networks before signing with Foxtel for its launch in 1995, where he continued to work until 2018. Collins also had a long-running movie review column in TV Times magazine and lectured at universities on film appreciation.

Collins met his wife Joan in 1983 when he was 48. They both lived in Vincentia, New South Wales. From Vincentia they moved to Winmalee, New South Wales. In 2005, they moved to a large house in Berry, New South Wales, which they sold in 2017.

He died peacefully while sleeping on June 20th, 2019 at the age of 84. , his wife said on Friday, June 21sr: “Our hearts are broken by the loss of our dear Bill – he will never be forgotten. How fortunate we were to have him in our lives.”
“Bill was 84 and lived a life filled with love and devotion for and from his family,” Foxtel said. “It was also filled with passion for movies and Hollywood and all the adventures and opportunities associated with his 55-year career in the entertainment industry.”
