Sonnen was born on April 3, 1977, in West Linn, Oregon, United States. After high school, Sonnen studied at Brigham Young University before transferring to the University of Oregon in Eugene, when BYU started considering cutting its wrestling program.
At Oregon, Sonnen received All-American honors, was a two-time PAC-10 runner-up, was a silver medalist at the year 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championships, and was a two-time Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman winner.
He is a graduate of the University of Oregon in the year 2001, with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. Sonnen had an interest in pursuing a career in professional wrestling and joined a tryout for World Championship Wrestling at the WCW Power Plant in the year 1998.

Sonnen began his mixed martial arts career in the year 1997 at the age of 19, by defeating Ben Hailey in Vancouver, Washington. He next defeated future ICON Sport Middleweight Champion as well as Strikeforce Middleweight contender Jason “Mayhem” Miller.
