She is widely known for holding multiple world championships in three weight classes, including the undisputed female light middleweight title (since March 2021); the undisputed female middleweight title (2019-2020); and the unified WBC and IBF female super middleweight titles (2017 – 2018).

Shields is also known as one of only three boxers in history, female or male, to hold all four major world titles in boxing—WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO, in two weight classes. Claressa is ranked the world’s best active female middleweight by BoxRec as of October 2022, and was also ranked as the best active female boxer, pound for pound, by ESPN and The Ring. As a professional mixed martial artist, she is competing in the Professional Fighters League.

Early Life and Education

Shields was born on 17 March 1995, in Flint, Michigan. Her parents are Bo Shields and Marcella Adams. She has three siblings. She was raised by her grandmother Joanne Adams. She began training at Berston Field House in Flint when she was 11, with Jason Crutchfield as her trainer.

Rise to Fame

Shields started her boxing career at a very young age of 11 years. she met her coach and trainer Jason Crutchfield at Berston Field House in Flint. In November 2016, Shields officially went pro. She won her first match, against Franchon Crews, by unanimous decision.

In 2017, Shields faced Szilvia Szabados for the North American Boxing Federation middleweight title and won. This was the main event on ShoBox, with a regional title fight between Antonio Nieves and Nikolai Potapov serving as the co-main event. It was the first time a women’s boxing was the main event on a United States premium network card.

On June 16, 2017, Shields headlined the “Detroit Brawl,” facing Sydney LeBlanc in her first scheduled eight-round. LeBlanc signed on with three days notice after Mery Rancier dropped out due to visa issues. Shields won the match by decision after all eight rounds.

Shields defeated defending champ Nikki Adler in Detroit for the WBC super-middleweight belt and the vacant IBF super-middleweight belt. The fight was on Showtime on August 4, 2017

Shields retained her WBC and IBF female super middleweight titles and won the WBAN Super Middleweight title by defeating 17-0 Tori Nelson on January 12, 2018. It was Shields’ first time going all 10 rounds in her professional career.

Christina Hammer

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields remained undefeated with a unanimous decision over Christina Hammer in a middleweight championship bout and one of the most anticipated fights in women’s boxing history
Shields (9-0) held three versions of the 160-pound title and snagged Hammer’s slice of the division championship to unify the championships on April 13, 2019, at Boardwalk Hall.

The charismatic Shields had a few thousand fans on their feet — and A-listers rooting her on from home — to give herself plenty of gold to strap around her waist to go with the medals around her neck. Undefeated and undisputed, Shield won 98-91 on two cards and 98-92 on the other and was simply dominant over 10 two-minute rounds.

Hammer’s mouthpiece went flying in the eighth round when she absorbed more blows to the face that left her reeling and with about no chance for a comeback. Shields, out of Flint, Michigan, nailed Hammer with a flurry of shots to close the eighth round and had the fans howling for “T-Rex!”

Loss

At the 2012 Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China claressa lost her match to Savannah Marshall 14:8 from England.

On the first round, the score was 2-2 but Marshall’s points began to rise on the judge’s scorecards as the fight progressed. They battled four rounds in the 75-kilogram division. claressa was really upset by the defeat, she even wrote an email saying”No, she wasn’t tough, She just ran the whole fight.”I feel like I won, but the judges weren’t giving me any points.
