Dutton was born on 30 January 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland. He dropped out of school before completing middle school. He had a short-lived work as an amateur boxer with the nickname “Roc”, a nickname acquired from “Rockhead” from adolescence rock-throwing battles.
After his jail term, Dutton went ahead to complete a two-year college program at Hagerstown Junior College—now Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown, Maryland where he graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in 1976.
Dutton enrolled as a drama major at Towson State University—now Towson University located within the Baltimore suburb of Towson, Maryland, where he later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. After his studies at Towson, Dutton obtained a master’s degree in acting from the Yale School of Drama in 1983.
