Cheryl’s career started as a volunteer at KNBR where she was responsible for handling traffic reports. She worked in this position for five months and was later promoted to secretary and operator of the switchboard. She started working as a late-night weekend reporter a year and a half later.
She finally started working at KGO-TV, ABC 7 in 1979 where she continues to work. In December 2015, Congresswoman Jackie Speier honored Jennings for her work on the Congressional Record and for her dedication to serving the people of the Bay Area through journalism. She was also honored with the two highest awards in broadcasting: the George Foster Peabody Award for covering the Radio and Television News Directors Association’s Loma Prieta earthquake & The Edward R. Murrow award.
Cheryl is also passionate about charity and volunteer work. She is active in charity events, mostly as an emcee. She is the co-founder of the Roots of Peace Children’s Penny Campaign program aimed at removing landmines in war-torn countries. Her works have seen her travel to many places and meet influential people such as: In 2009, she went to South Africa to meet a Cape Town-based Marin man. The man has dedicated his life to helping children with deadly diseases such as HIV and AIDS in rural areas.
In 2013, she traveled to Israel and the Palestinian Authority to witness the Israelis and Palestinians working together to remove landmines in the fields of Bethlehem. She also met with the then President of Afghanistan, President Ashraf Ghani, in January 2015. Her career highlight was the Loma Prieta earthquake night in 1989.
