Chris Chibnall Career
Theatre writing
Chibnall’s debut short play, directed by Lawrence Till, was performed as part of Contact Theatre’s Young Playwright’s Festival in 1988. During his college years, he created two plays, Victims and Now We Are Free, which were staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and directed by Edward Lewis.
In 1998, he was named Writer in Residence at GRiP Theatre Company, where he wrote three full-length pieces, including Best Daze and Gaffer!, as well as several short plays. Matthew Broughton took over as Writer in Residence after Chibnall. Gaffer! was recreated in 2004 at Southwark Playhouse.
Chibnall participated in a Royal National Theatre Studio attachment in 1999, followed by a year-long attachment to Soho Theatre in 2000, which culminated in his play Kiss Me Like You Mean It, which was staged at Soho Theatre and directed by Abigail Morris. Catherine McCormack, Jason Hughes, Marlene Sidaway, and Harry Towb were among the cast members.
The drama was nominated for the Meyer-Whitworth Award and has since been staged in a variety of locations across the world, including a successful three-month run in Paris in 2004.
Television writing
Chibnall’s debut television writing was the successful monologue Stormin’ Norman, starring James Bolam and produced by Carlton Television for ITV. In 2001, he was invited, along with writer Nigel McCrery, to create the structure for a drama series that would become Born and Bred.
Born and Bred, starring Bolam and Michael French, aired on BBC One for four years, from 2002 to 2005. Chibnall served as the show’s head writer and consultant producer (later, executive producer), penning seventeen of the thirty-six hour-long episodes.
Chibnall was the only writer other than the show’s founders to write for both series of the BBC One police drama Life on Mars (2006–07). He was a member of the production crew that accepted the BAFTA Audience Award onstage at the London Palladium in 2007.
Chibnall was in charge of producing a proposed fantasy series based on the fabled sorcerer Merlin for BBC One’s early Saturday evening family drama slot in 2005.
Despite multiple scripts being prepared, BBC Head of Drama Jane Tranter ultimately decided not to green-light the idea, which later resurfaced as Merlin (2008–2012) without Chibnall’s involvement.
Dick Wolf and Kudos Film and Television chose Chibnall to be the showrunner of ITV1’s Law & Order: the UK, a police procedural/legal drama based on the original US series, in 2007.
Chibnall served as the show’s principal writer and executive producer, penning six of the first thirteen episodes based on screenplays from the original US series. ITV commissioned a second season of thirteen episodes, however, after establishing the series, Chibnall decided to quit to focus on other literary projects. Chibnall also directed Camelot, an adult reimagining of the Arthurian mythology that aired on the Starz network.
It aired in early April 2011 and was shot at Ardmore Studios near Dublin. The show was terminated after a single season, however Chibnall stated that he had chosen not to participate in the second series in any event due to other writing priorities.
In December 2013, Chibnall published The Great Train Robbery, a two-part dramatization that depicts the narrative of the Great Train Robbery on August 8, 1963.
The first installment was released on the same day that train robber Ronnie Biggs died. Chibnall conceived and wrote Broadchurch for ITV in 2013, starring David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Arthur Darvill, Pauline Quirke, and David Bradley.
The series garnered extremely good reviews from both critics and viewers. It told the narrative of the fictional seaside town of Broadchurch, which was dealing with the possible murder of a little kid. The finale drew approximately 9 million viewers at its peak.
Due to the popularity of the first season, a second series was announced at the end of the first, with location filming wrapping up in October 2014. The second season aired in 2015, followed by the third and final series in 2017.
Doctor Who
Chibnall is a long-time Doctor Who enthusiast who appeared on the BBC discussion show Open Air in 1986 as a representative of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, criticizing The Trial of a Time Lord (1986), particularly the Terror of the Vervoids section.
Chibnall was named chief writer and co-producer of the science-fiction program Torchwood in 2005. The series, a Doctor Who spin-off, launched on BBC Three in October 2006 to a then-record-breaking audience for a non-sport digital channel broadcast in the UK.
The show went on to win “Best New Drama” at the 2007 TV Quick Awards, as well as “Best Drama Series” at the 2007 BAFTA Cymru awards. The series has also received Hugo and Saturn nominations.
The program has received critical acclaim in the United States, where it has aired on BBC America and HDNet. Chibnall authored eight episodes in the first two seasons, including the finales of both series and the opening episode of series two.
He collaborated with Russell T Davies on all areas of the show’s production. While working on Torchwood, Chibnall also wrote the episode “42” for Doctor Who’s third series in 2007.
He returned for the 2010 series, writing “The Hungry Earth” / “Cold Blood,” a two-part novella that reintroduced the Silurians to the series. Chibnall also penned the second and fourth episodes of the seventh series, “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” and “The Power of Three,” as well as the online/red button exclusive Pond Life, for the seventh season in 2012.
He also wrote another short, P.S., which was never produced but was subsequently made available online in storyboard form. The BBC announced in January 2016 that Chibnall will take over as executive producer of Doctor Who, succeeding Steven Moffat, and would be the show’s lead writer and executive producer beginning with the eleventh series of the revived period.
After serving as an executive producer on An Adventure in Space and Time, Matt Strevens joined Chibnall as co-executive producer. In February 2017, when asked if the next Doctor might be a woman, he responded, “Nothing is ruled out, but I don’t want the casting to be a gimmick, and that’s all I can say.”
Chibnall stated in July 2017 when Jodie Whittaker was confirmed as the Thirteenth Doctor, “I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman, and we’re happy to have secured our number one choice.” Chibnall scripted the last moments of Moffat’s last episode “Twice Upon a Time” to allow him to write Whittaker’s first words on the show, as he did with the previous shift of showrunners.
This happened before in the 2010 Christmas special “The End of Time,” when Moffat took over for Russell T. Davies in the final seconds of the program, writing Matt Smith’s first words as the Eleventh Doctor.
On July 29, 2021, the BBC announced that Chibnall would stand down as Doctor Who’s showrunner, and Jodie Whittaker would step down as the Thirteenth Doctor. Following Chibnall’s resignation, the BBC announced on September 24, 2021, that Davies will return as Doctor Who’s showrunner.
