Colin Thackery is an 89-year-old singer and Chelsea Pensioner who is the winner of series 13 of Britain’s Got Talent.
He lives in The Royal Hospital in London, has been singing since he was eight years old.

Colin was married to Joan. He met her while in the army and he met her at the weekly camp dance. Colin and Joan had two children and four grandchildren.

‘People didn’t know if it was a good idea because you might not make it. Joan’s own dad came back from the first world war minus an arm, but it all panned out.’He continued.
Colin revealed that they were reunited two years later when Joan was shipped out to join him in Hong Kong.
‘Instead of coming home my regiment was posted to Hong Kong,’ he explained: ‘We stayed abroad for another two years then, but we were allowed to bring our wives out for free.’
‘So, here’s this young girl, I think she was only 19 then, from a small mining village who had never been as far as the coast coming all around the world.’
‘She had a very fine alto voice, so after when I retired we moved to Norfolk and we both belonged to an operatic society there.
‘We sang all the time and danced, of course! We were always dancing and if you looked at the projectors on the back of the stage [on BGT] there were pictures of us dancing.’
When asked what her reaction would have been to him performing on Britain’s Got Talent, Colin said: ‘She would have said at the end, “you know, don’t get ahead of yourself, lad.”‘
Wife’s Death
Joan passed away in December 2016. ‘I have a lovely picture of her in my bedroom up on the wall,’ he said before laughing: ‘I talk to her all of the time, as daft as it sounds.’ Colin revealed.
Colin Thackery Army
Colin served the Army for 25 years, in the 45th regiment of the Royal Artillery. He is a veteran of the Korean War.
He went to war two weeks after marrying his partner Joan. Colin lost a part of his hearing during the war but has enjoyed singing for many years.
Colin Thackery BGT Audition
Colin auditioned for Britain Got’s talent which started broadcasting on 6th April 2019. For his audition, he sang a heartfelt rendition of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, which was a dedication to his wife.
Colin Thackery Semi-Finals
During the semifinals, Colin was joined by his fellow Chelsea Pensioners for a heartfelt performance of Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ which was dedicated to his late wife.
After the performance, the four judges gave Colin and his Chelsea pensioner colleagues a standing ovation.
Judge Alesha Dixon said: “There’s just something about you, you have won our hearts and I know everyone watching at home is in love right now.”
Judge Amanda Holden said; “You and your colleagues, friends, are literally the backbone of this country, if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t be here. I think if you’ve lost somebody that song is the song, isn’t it?”
Simon Cowell was also impressed by the performance and he said, That was bloody brilliant. What I really loved about that is it just reminds everybody what people like you did all those years ago and you’re still standing and it was such a sincere performance. Actually, your voice was way better this time than it was in the first audition.”
Judge David Walliams suggested that Colin could go all the way and said: “For the first time this week I can honestly say I think we could be looking at the winner of Britain’s Got Talent this year.”
Colin made it to the finals by majority vote from the public.
Finals
Collin was crowned the winner of the 13th series of Britain Got Talent after he won over the other two contestants.
He won the £250,000 prize money when he was crowned the winner.
