He remained in Portsmouth for only two months before his family moved, Hughley was raised in South Central Los Angeles and his teen years were troubled as he became a member of the notorious street gang, the Bloods, and was expelled from San Pedro High School.

Hughley collapsed in June 2020 while performing at Zanies Nashville Comedy Club. He then began leaning on his stool. Staff, sensing trouble, rushed to his aid, but Hughley continued to collapse and hit the floor. Several staff members hustled him off-stage into his dressing room.
