Hansen began his career as a radio disc jockey and operations manager at KCOB in Newton, Iowa, covering the Newton Cardinals and the Newton Nite Hawks. He then went as News Director to Knoxville, Iowa to KNIA radio. He then moved to Saint Cloud, Minnesota to KCLD radio.
After that, by working at a radio station he grew up listening to, KOIL in Omaha, Nebraska, he got closer to his hometown of Logan, Iowa. He then took up a job as a sports reporter at KMTV in Omaha as well.

Hansen made his name in 1986 when he broke a story about a massive scandal involving payments to players on the Southern Methodist University football team with his producer, John Sparks.
Hansen’s report ultimately led to the NCAA canceling the 1987 season of the Mustangs— the so-called “death penalty.” His reporting of the scandal gained him a Peabody Award for distinguished journalism, a DuPont-Columbia Award, and several death threats.
