In one issue, he notoriously used Zapf Dingbats, a font containing only symbols, as the font for what he considered a rather dull interview with Bryan Ferry. Steve and Debbee Pezman, publishers of Surfer magazine and later Surfers Journal tapped Carson to design Beach Culture, a quarterly publication that evolved out of a to-the-trade annual supplement.

For one feature on a blind surfer, Carson opened with a two-page spread covered in black. After Beach Culture, Carson re-designed Surfer magazine and art directed and design it for the next two years, prior to starting Ray Gun Magazine for 3 years. Carson then relocated his studio to New York City for 7 years. He now splits his time between the West Indies, California, and Europe.

David Carson Quotes
- “Never mistake legibility for communication.”
- “Graphic design will save the world right after rock and roll do.”
- I’m a big believer in the emotion of design, and the message that’s sent before somebody begins to read before they get the rest of the information; what is the emotional response they get to the product, to the story, to the painting – whatever it is.
- There are many ways you communicate. With color, texture, sound… Even words can communicate.
- I think I work much the same way I always have. I’m trying to interpret something emotionally and visually. I’m reading the brief or article, or listening to the music, and deciding where that sends me, and what would it look like.
- Having done a lot of magazines, I’m very curious how big magazines handle big stories, and I was very curious to see how ‘Time’ and ‘Newsweek’ would handle 9/11. And I was basically pretty disappointed to see that they had chosen to show the photo we’d already
- Maybe at some subconscious level, things are done to upset somebody – part of me continues to see no valid reason for many of the accepted rules of design.
