Fagen was born to his mother, Elinor Fagen, and his father, Joseph Fagen, on January 10, 1948, in Passaic, New Jersey, United States. At the age of ten, he relocated with his family to Kendall Park, South Brunswick, New Jersey. Though Fagen was upset with the transition to living in the suburbs.
When he was 11 years old, his cousin, Barbara Cohen, suggested jazz music, and Fagen went to the Newport Jazz Festival, where he began developing an antisocial personality. Fagen was trained to play the piano, and he played in the high school marching band.
Fagen attained his diploma in 1965 from South Brunswick High School and then proceeded to Bard College to major in English literature. While at college, he met Walter Becker in a coffeehouse in 1967. Fagen and Becker developed along lasting relationship, and they founded Steely Dan in the summer of 1970.
Fagen and Becker then relocated to Los Angeles, where they had their band’s first lineup assembled in December 1971. The duo wrote all the songs of Steely Dan with Fagen on vocals and keyboards and Becker on bass, and afterwards, lead guitar.
After Becker died in 2017, Fagen wanted to retire the Steely Dan moniker out of respect for his partner and tour under a different title, though his supporters advised him against it for commercial reasons.

Illness
