Ernest Dickerson Career
Dickerson began his career as a cinematographer on music videos for Bruce Springsteen, Anita Baker, and Miles Davis after graduating then went on to direct his first professional film as a director of photography, John Sayles’ Brother from Another Planet (1984).
Dickerson was a cameraman on John Jopson’s concert video One Night with Blue Note (1985) while working on the first two seasons of George Romero’s television series Tales from the Darkside, and was later approached by Spike Lee, who had found the funds to shoot his feature She’s Gotta Have It (1986). Dickerson worked with Lee again on five more films, including Do the Right Thing (1989).
Their most recent collaboration was on Malcolm X, which was released in 1992, the same year Dickerson made his directorial debut with the crime drama Juice. He was also a second unit director on Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna (2008).
Dickerson has directed episodes of acclaimed shows such as Once Upon a Time, Dexter, The Walking Dead, and Treme for television.
He has long been a devotee of horror films and has collaborated with Mick Garris on both Masters of Horror and Fear Itself, as well as directed Demon Knight and Bones (2001). Dickerson has always wanted to make films, and becoming a director has always been one of his ambitions.

Dickerson returned as a director for the third season in 2004 as a result of his success. He helmed the episodes “Hamsterdam” and “Mission Accomplished” for the season finale.
He contributed two further episodes to the show’s fourth season in 2006, “Misgivings” and the season finale “Final Grades.” Dickerson attended the presentation to accept the prize for the fourth season, which garnered a second AFI Award.
