Gary Kemp Biography
Gary James Kemp is an English singer, songwriter, musician and actor. Kemp is best known as the lead guitarist, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter for the new wave band Spandau Ballet.
Kemp wrote the lyrics and music for all 23 of Spandau Ballet’s hit singles, including “To Cut a Long Story Short”, “True”, “Gold”, “Chant No. 1, I Don’t Need This Pressure On”, “Through the Barricades” and “Only When You Leave”.
In the 1980s, Spandau Ballet became one of the biggest British bands generating over 25 million record sales worldwide. Kemp was an Ivor Novello Award winner for Outstanding Song Collection in 2012.

In 1989, Kemp and his brother, Martin returned to acting after recording Spandau Ballet’s final album Heart Like a Sky. His fellow band members Tony Hadley, Steve Norman and John Keeble criticized him but received good reviews for his performance as Ronnie Kray in The Krays (1990). The band, Spandau Ballet died after the success of this film.
On March 6, 1990, Spandau played the final live show of their 10th-anniversary tour at the Edinburgh Playhouse. The band did not perform live together again for 19 years. His fellow band members Tony Hadley, Steve Norman and John Keeble attempted to sue him for alleged unpaid royalties in 1999. Kemp denied their claims that an agreement existed where he should pay his bandmates a share of the royalties earned. They subsequently lost their court case.
In 2009 which is after two decades apart, the band announced their reformation on HMS Belfast venue. They did two world tours including five nights at London O2 Arena. The band story was documented by the critically acclaimed film Soul Boys of the Western World which premiered at SXSW in 2012. Soul Boys of the Western World was screened at film festivals all over the world including Cannes, Rome and NYC Doc.
Spandau Ballet played their first show on June 6, 2018, with new singer Ross William Wild at London’s Subterania. This was after Tony Hadley announced on social media that he had left the band. Spandau Ballet successively played six European shows in Rome, Milan, Padua, Utrecht and Tilburg with the last of those in London at Eventim Apollo Hammersmith on October 29, 2018. Ross William Wild quit the band in May 2019.

Gary was active in the Anna Scher Children’s Theatre drama club along with his brother Martin Kemp. Martin Kemp is the younger brother of Gary. He is an English actor, director, musician and occasional television presenter, best known as the bassist in the new wave band Spandau Ballet and for his role as Steve Owen in EastEnders. In 2012, Martin Kemp finished third in the summer series of Celebrity Big Brother.
Martin and Gary appeared in many TV shows, including Jackanory, The Tomorrow People and Dixon of Dock Green.

A best selling pop diva Rachel Marron played by Whitney Houston has a stalker whose obsession has risen to the level of disturbing threats. Rachel is urged by her manager played by Gary to hire a former secret service agent Frank Farmer played by Kevin Costner as her bodyguard. The character Farmer soon becomes an integral part of Rachel’s inner circle although he was initially resented and treated with disdain for his hard-nosed security procedures. Rachel and Farmer become closer as they spend time together.

Gary features in the TV series, Eastenders. The Tony Holland and Julia Smith TV series star Adam Woodyatt, Steve McFadden and Pam St. Clement. The series follows the everyday lives of working-class inhabitants of Albert Square, a traditional Victorian square of terrace houses surrounding a park in the East End of London’s Walford borough. The Victorian square includes the Queen Vic pub and a street market.
