Shearer’s parents were Jewish immigrants from Austria and Poland. His parents were Jewish settlers from Poland and Austria respectively. His parents fled Nazi-occupied Europe and met in Havana, Cuba.
As a child, Shearer and his family constantly listened to radio programs such as Bob and Ray and the weekly show for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. His father passed when he was 12 and he had his Bar Mitzvah the following year. Shearer grew up in the neighborhood of West Adams. Starting when Shearer was four years old, he had a piano teacher whose daughter worked as a child actress.
The piano teacher afterward chose to make a career change and become a children’s agent, since she knew people in the business through her daughter’s work. The teacher requested Shearer’s parent’s permission to take him to an audition. Shearer graduated from Los Angeles High School and went to UCLA as a political science major in the early 1960s.
