J M Coetzee Biography
John Maxwell Coetzee is a South African novelist, essayist, linguist, and translator. He is popularly known for his novels about the effects of colonization and in 2003 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
J M Coetzee attended St. Joseph’s, a Catholic school located in Cape Town suburb of Rondebosch. He later studied mathematics and English at the University of Cape Town and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English. In 1961 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Mathematics.
In 1962 J M Coetzee relocated to the United Kingdom and worked as a computer programmer for IBM in London and ICT (International Computers and Tabulators) in Bracknell staying until 1965.
In 1968 In 1968, he began teaching English literature at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he stayed until 1971. It is at Buffalo that he began the first novel, Dusklands.
J M Coetzee returned to South Africa to teach English literature at the University of Cape Town, where he was promoted Professor of General Literature in 1983 and was a Distinguished Professor of Literature between 1999 and 2001.
In 2002 J M Coetzee relocated to Austria and was made an honorary research fellow at the English Department of the University of Adelaide.
