He was born to Charlie Nicklaus a pharmacist and Helen. His father was an all-round athlete who played football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Charlie was a scratch golfer and local tennis champion in his youth.

In 1959 and 1961 he represented the United States against Great Britain and Ireland on winning Walker Cup teams. From 1957-1961 attended Ohio State where he majored in pre-pharmacy and had good grades in his first three years. He, later on, he changed his programs to study insurance. He worked in the insurance field while he attended college.
In late 1961, he announced that he was turning professional in order to support his family.
PGA Tour career
1962-63: Professional breakthrough
In 1962 he began his career on the PGA Tour. He heavily debated the idea of remaining an amateur in order to emulated his idol, Bobby Jones. However, he realized that in order to be regarded as the best he would have to compete in greater frequency against the best players. In his 17th start, he won his first PGA tournament when he defeated Arnold Palmer at Oakmont for the 1962 U.S. Open. He also earned US$17,500 for his performance and effort.

In 1963, he won the Masters and the PGA Championship. These victories made him the then-youngest winner of the Masters and third-youngest winner of the PGA Championship. He got over US$100,000 Tour money coming second place after Arnold Palmer.
