Warden was born in Newark, New Jersey, as the son of Laura M. (née Costello) and John Warden Lebzelter, who was an engineer and technician. He and his family were both Jewish and lived in deprivation.
He was of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) and Irish roots. He grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, he was dismissed from high school for battling and ultimately fought as a professional boxer under the name Johnny Costello. He battled in 13 bouts as a welterweight, though gained little money.

Warden was discharged with the position of sergeant and chose to chase an acting career on the G.I. Bill. He repositioned to New York City to attend acting school, then entered the company of Theatre ’47 in Dallas in 1947 as a proficient actor, bringing his middle name as his surname.
This repertory company, run by Margo Jones, became prominent in the 1940s and ’50s for producing Tennessee Williams’s plays. The experience gave him a practical grounding in both classic and contemporary drama, and he shuttled between Texas and New York for five years as he was in market as an actor.

Career
Warden started his acting career in 1951 where he appeared in his first trusted film role in The Man with My Face. Between 1952 to 1955, he showed up in the television series Mister Peepers with Wally Cox. In 1953, he was cast as a sympathetic corporal in From Here to Eternity. His breakthrough film role was Juror No. 7, it was about a salesman who wants a quick decision in a murder case, in 12 Angry Men.
