James Hackett Biography

James Hackett is an American businessman and the president and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company.He held sales and management positions at Procter & Gamble in Detroit, Michigan from 1977 to 1981.

He joined the Grand Rapids-based office furniture company Steelcase in 1981 holding a variety of sales and marketing positions. In 1994, he becomes the company’s CEO at 39, making him the youngest leader in the history of the company. He retired in 2014, after serving for 20 years.

During his term, Steelcase eliminated nearly 12,000 employees as part of downsizing and restructuring of the business; in 1996, he also led the company to acquire a majority stake in IDEO. He became a proponent of design thinking, which focuses on how humans experience a product. He stayed on as vice chairman of the company from 2014 to 2015.
