Jessica Krug Biography

Jessica Krug (born Jessica A. Krug) is an American associate professor of history at George Washington University (GWU) (2012–present) (adopting on occasion the pseudonymous – and self-described “salsa” – the surname of La Bombalera). She is the author of the well-reviewed work of Columbian, Brazilian, and West African histories Fugitive Modernities: Kisama and the Politics of Freedom, which treats the Quiçama people, at home in Angola and within the diaspora, especially in Brazil. The book was a finalist for the Frederick Douglass Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. Krug’s additional studies focus on African American history and Latin America. According to Krug, her principal focus has been on advocacies on behalf of people of color as well as in anti-gentrification activism. She has published essays in Essence and at the race-exploring website RaceBaitR.

Krug lived for years under an assumed race and ethnicity until she disclosed the truth in a September 3, 2020, essay on the blog website Medium.

Having assumed identities such as that of a Bronx-bred Afro-“boricua” (Afro-Puerto Rican), Krug, in the blog post entitled “The Truth, and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies”, wrote, “I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then the US rooted Blackness, then the Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness.”

Hari Ziyad, the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr, a website where Krug had published articles, said she had only come forward with the revelation because her deception had been discovered by others and was about to be made public against her wishes. “She didn’t do it out of benevolence,” they said. “She did it because she had been found out.” Similarly, Michigan State University assistant professor Yomaira C. Figueroa believed that pending public revelations of Krug’s true racial identity prompted her confession.

GWU spokesperson Crystal Nosal said in emails to news organizations that the university was “aware of the post” and “looking into the situation”. GWU’s department of history asked Krug to resign her tenured professorship.

“Dr. Krug has resigned her position, effective immediately. Her classes for this semester will be taught by other faculty members, and students in those courses will receive additional information this week,” the university said in a statement obtained by CNN on Wednesday.
It continued, “We hope that with this update our community can begin to heal and move forward.”
Requests for comment from Krug, formerly a history professor specializing in Africa and Latin America, have not been returned.

One student at GWU who had a class with Krug told CNN she fronted as an Afro-Latina woman from the Bronx.

It is from that whole scandal that Kraig apologized for what she called her “continued appropriation of Black Caribbean identity,” saying she was wrong, unethical, immoral, anti-Black, and colonial. “I am not a culture vulture,” she wrote. “I am a culture leech.”

Jessica Krug Parents

According to the British tabloid The Daily Mail, Krug skipped her mother Sherry’s funeral after her death from pneumonia at age 65 in October 2013, and family friends, the paper claimed, “now wonder if Krug cruelly snubbed her 65-year-old mom because she was worried about being ‘caught out.’

“It was a terrible thing to do,” the paper quotes an unnamed “family friend” saying. “She didn’t even offer any sort of excuse. And maybe we now know why. I’m not aware of anyone in the family has had any contact with her ever since.”

In a Thursday blog post, Krug revealed she had been raised in a white, middle-class family in suburban Kansas City, Missouri, but had pretended to be Black for most of her adult life.

In her September 2020 blog post, Krug claimed that she had “been battling some “unaddressed mental health demons for her entire life” dating back to childhood and said she frequently thought of confessing the deception, “but my cowardice was always more powerful than my ethics.”

To say that I clearly have been battling some unaddressed mental health demons for my entire life, as both an adult and child, is obvious. Mental health issues likely explain why I assumed a false identity initially, as a youth, and why I continued and developed it for so long; the mental health professionals from whom I have been so belatedly seeking help assure me that this is a common response to some of the severe trauma that marked my early childhood and teen years. But mental health issues can never, will never, neither explain nor justify, neither condone nor excuse, that, in spite of knowing and regularly critiquing any and every non-Black person who appropriates from Black people, my false identity was crafted entirely from the fabric of Black lives.

She had lived “under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then the US rooted Blackness, then the Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness,” she wrote.

According to research, Krug’s parents split when she was a child and that her family wasn’t in attendance at her father’s funeral when he died in 2017 at age 69. They didn’t know, the friend said, whether Krug had attended.

Jessica Krug Books

Fugitive Modernities

Krug’s book, Fugitive Modernities, was well-received among peers after publication in 2018. In it, Krug engages in a “rigorous examination of identity formation” of Kisama, a mountainous region in Angola that became a destination for those fleeing the slave trade in the late 16th century. Krug’s intellectual history of Kisama was “impressive in its breadth of research” and gave scholars different ways of thinking about how Africans influenced Black people elsewhere around the world. It was also the first history of the Kisama region. Krug argued that “Kisama allows us to imagine a more humane and less brutalized form of interpersonal relationship in which the structures erected by states to constrain us are overcome in favor of shared liberation.”

Fathers of No Nation

Fathers of No Nation, Krugs’s work in progress, is slated to focus on “gendered politics of authority and state in São Tomé, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica from the sixteenth century through the present.”
