Shepard arrived in California in the early 80s, where she supported herself by working as a stripper in various Los Angeles strip clubs and modeling for car shoots. It was during her time stripping that she met genre filmmaker Dan O’Bannon. After a number of small television roles, Shepard broke into film with H. B. Halicki’s The Junkman (1982). Her roles in over a dozen B movies followed; including 1985’s The Return of the Living Dead, which was directed and written by O’Bannon.

In 1992 she capitalized on her “B-girl” status by penning Invasion of the B-Girls, a book of interviews with cult actresses such as Kitten Natividad, Linnea Quigley, Yvette Vickers, Haji, and Mary Woronov. She has also written for such publications as Premiere, Cosmopolitan, Details, and The Associated Press.

Her autobiography, If I’m So Famous, How Come Nobody’s Ever Heard of Me? detailing some of the less glamorous aspects of filmmaking and her experiences working in adult entertainment, was published in 1996. Shepard has been struggling with invasive breast cancer since 2011, and has been treated with chemotherapy, lymph node removal, and a double mastectomy and most recently been spotted at the ‘Flapper Starlet’ in the 2012 Academy Award Best Picture winner, The Artist.

The Return of the Living Dead was a 1985 American comedy horror film that was written and directed by Dan O’Bannon, and starring Clu Gulager, James Karen, Thom Matthews, and Don Calfa. The film explains the story of how a warehouse owner, accompanied by his two employees, a mortician friend, and a group of teenage punks, deal with the accidental release of a horde of unkillable, brain-hungry zombies onto an unsuspecting town over the Fourth of July weekend.

The film, described as a “mordant punk comedy”, is known for introducing the popular concept of zombies eating brains, as opposed to eating human flesh, like previous zombie iterations. Additionally, It is also known as the first film to ever show zombies running, as well as zombies being able to speak.

The film is also quite different from virtually all other cinematic depictions of the living dead, in that the zombies portrayed in the film cannot be killed by a standard “headshot”.The film is also notable for its soundtrack, which features several Los Angeles-based deathrock and punk rock bands of the era. The film was a critical success and performed moderately well at the box office. Its enduring popularity has spawned four sequels and turned it into a cult classic.
