Towne was born in a family of actors and fi,m producers. Her uncle is the famous Robert Towne while her cousins Chiara Towne and Katharine Towne are also Hollywood actors. After she graduated from college, Towne took dance lessons at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York City but later dropped out to concentrate on acting.
Although her whole family was in the film industry, she struggled to make a name for herself in the Hollywood industry in the 1990s. She began as a production assistant for the 1998 film Second Chances.
