Shachtman said on Thursday memo to staffers that The Beast has hit its stride in recent years by doing what they do best, which is essentially…being themselves. He said Street smart, not fusty. Omnivorous and idiosyncratic in their tastes. Worldly, naughty and continually hustling. The type of outfit that celebrates heroes where they find ’em — Lord knows, these days they could use a few and goes after villains even harder. The kind of journalism that can’t wait to take a side, throw a punch and go out for a drink when the fight’s done.” It was reported by The Washington Post that Avlon begins his full-time role at CNN on June 26.
Avlon said that he loved leading The Daily Beast newsroom but after his five years it’s his time for a new challenge. John Avlon Wingnuts
What’s a Wingnut? It’s someone on the far-right wing or far-left wing of the political spectrum. They are the professional partisans and the unhinged activists, the hardcore haters, and the paranoid conspiracy theorists. Pumped up by the self-segregated echo chamber of talk radio, cable news, and the Internet, Wingnuts see politics as ideological bloodsport, an all-or-nothing struggle for the nation’s soul. They are energized by dividing America into “us against them.” And for those with a vested interest in stirring the crazy-pot, all this is good for business. Hate is a cheap and easy recruiting tool. But it can be murder on a democracy.
