Career
Milius began his career in the film industry as an assistant to producer Lawrence Gordon at American International Pictures in 1967. In 1968, he was involved in the formation of Zoetrope Studios with Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Milius made his feature screenplay debut in 1968 with the prison drama The Devil’s Eight, which he co-wrote with Willard Huyck. He followed this up with screenplays for the Dirty Harry films Dirty Harry (1971) and Magnum Force (1973).
In 1973, Milius made his directorial debut with the gangster film Dillinger. He then wrote and directed the historical adventure film The Wind and the Lion (1975), starring Sean Connery and Candice Bergen. Milius’s next film was the surfing drama Big Wednesday (1978), which he co-wrote with Dennis Hopper. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to launch the careers of Jan-Michael Vincent, Gary Busey, and William Katt.
