Since his young age, Moxley developed an interest in wrestling at a very tender age. He revealed named Bret Hart as his childhood idol He used wrestling to escape his rough upbringing by watching video wrestling and reading stories about wrestling in the early days.
A year after he started training as a wrestler, he dropped out of high school. He funded himself by working in restaurants and factories, but he was regularly fired because he would skip work if he had been scheduled to fight a match that had interfered with his shift.
He started working for Les Thatcher in the Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) as a teenager by selling popcorn and setting up a ring. At the age of 18, he began training as a professional wrestler under Thatcher and Cody Hawk. He made his debut with the ring name Jon Moxley in June 2004, losing his debut match against Ala Hussein.
