Pep Guardiola opens up on Man City attempt to sign Jorginho
Updated: 20 JUL 2018
Pep Guardiola insisted he is not disappointed that the ‘exceptional’ Jorginho has signed for Chelsea.
Manchester City made the Napoli star their primary target in midfield this summer and one of only two players they hoped to sign in the transfer window.
It looked as though a move was set to happen and the Blues were hopeful he would be on the plane for their summer tour.
But the City manager was instead accompanied by Aleksandar Zinchenko on his first media duties of the season after Chelsea swooped at the death to take both the Italian international and his former manager Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge.
Asked about the deal, Guardiola reflected on the fact that he only wants players in Manchester who want to come and play for the club.
“No, I’m not disappointed,” he said. “We tried, but at the end all my advice for the players is that they have to go where they want to go.
“For the guy, it would have been a mistake for him and for us if he had decided to come here when he wanted to go with Maurizio and Chelsea.
“So it is important that English football has received an exceptional player and at the end if they want to come, it’s better they come.
“If he decides to go to Chelsea for the reasons he has explained or will explain, then all the best for him.”
