Estelle Parsons Biography

Estelle Parsons is a well-known American actress, singer, and stage director. She became a singer prior to choosing to pursue a career in acting after studying law. She worked for the television program Today and made her stage debut in 1961. In the 1960s, Parsons launched her career on Broadway prior to progressing to film.

She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Blanche Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and was correspondingly selected for her work in Rachel, Rachel (1968). She worked extensively in film and theatre during the 1970s and later directed several Broadway productions.

Subsequently work included perhaps her well-known role, as Beverly Harris, mother of the title character, on the sitcom Roseanne, and, later, on its spinoff The Conners. She has been selected five times for the Tony Award.

Parsons won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Blanche Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). Bonnie and Clyde was a 1967 American biographical neo-noir crime drama film produced by Arthur Penn and starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the title characters Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker.

The film again features Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons. The screenplay was by Robert Benton and David Newman. Robert Towne and Beatty provided uncredited contributions to the script; Beatty produced the film. The music was by Charles Strouse.

Cherry Lane Theatre has revealed that its acclaimed show, Israel Horovitz’s comedy Out of the Mouths of Babes, will close prematurely in order to preserve the health of one of its stars, Estelle Parsons. Oscar-winner Parsons was brought to the hospital after the first act of the July 6 evening performance and was treated for dehydration. Originally scheduled to play through July 31, Out of the Mouths of Babes will not resume its run, with the July 6 performance marking the final show.

“Estelle had been debilitated by the heat and felt ill at intermission. The remainder of the performance was canceled and Estelle was taken to the hospital for care and observation overnight,“ said Cherry Lane artistic director Angelina Fiordellisi in a press statement.

“She left there with a clean bill of health and remains in good health, but upon further consultation with her long-time physician, it has been determined that it is inadvisable for her to resume the rigors of performing this two-act play. Under the circumstances, we regret that we must cancel the remainder of the play’s engagement. We love Estelle and want her to have the rest and peace of mind she needs.”
