Early Life and Education

Lauderdale was born and brought up in a working-class suburb of Columbus, Ohio. He relates his parents as “hardworking”. “My parents”, he says, “were strict disciplinarians, and while I thought it was unfair back then, I’m glad they were that way because it kept me out of trouble.” His father, in particular, taught him the importance of being himself.

“My father”, he says, “taught me to never allow anyone to define who I am, that I am the only one who can do that. He taught me to not think of myself as a victim”.

He did everything from processing film, to writing news copy, to producing, and for on-air talent. He completed his education at Ohio University, majoring in Communications and graduating cum laude in 1973. In 1974, Lauderdale moved to South Florida for a reporting opportunity at Channel 7 (WCKT-TV, at the time).

At age 17, after beating an oratorical contest, Lauderdale obtained a job offer from the news director at WTVN-TV (ABC) in Columbus. He received the job and began work in November 1968, part-time at night, processing film.

Jennings and Dwight Lauderdale, who were rooted together in the mid-2000s, caught up in April when she made a surprise return to her home in Central Florida. “When I saw our news crew come to interview you and I was in Universal with my parents, I just had to pause,” Lauderdale said. Dwight Lauderdale said her arrival at Local 10 in 2004 was the right time for her career.

“I was tired, I had a career of 40 years, but you came along at the right time to give me the power,” Lauderdale said.

Lauderdale, who was far-sighted, discovered that he might be a candidate for corrective eye surgery after seeing a news story about the operation at his own station. Lauderdale sought advice when he realized how important the procedure was to his job performance.
