Auletta taught and educated volunteers from the Peace Corps while at graduate college. He has been working in government and on several political campaigns, including the 1968 presidential run by Robert Kennedy. He was also the New York City Off-Track Betting Corporation’s first executive director. Auletta became the New York Post’s chief political correspondent in 1974. He also wrote a weekly political column for the New York Daily News between 1977 and 1993 and was a WCBS-TV political commentator. In 1986, he earned the Gerald Loeb Award for Large Newspapers. He was the guest editor of the 2002 edition of The Best Business Stories of the Year.
Auletta has been writing The New Yorker’s “Communications Annals” profiles since 1992. His 2001 Ted Turner profile, “The Lost Tycoon,” won a Profile Writing National Magazine Award. He is the author of twelve novels, The Streets Were Paved With Gold (1979) being his first.
