McIntyre made his acting debut appearing mainly in short films, prior to performing guest roles in the Australian television series Rush and Neighbours. He made his American television debut on the HBO miniseries The Pacific. After actor Andy Whitfield’s diagnosis and passing from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, McIntyre succeeded him in the titular role of Spartacus for the remainder of the series.
