Lowry encountered Lloyd Kaufman when auditioning for a role in Joe (1970) in New York City, and he offered her to act in a supporting role in The Battle of Love’s Return (1971), which she accepted.
She was cast in David Durston’s horror flick I Drink Your Blood after finishing the film in early 1970. (1970). She starred in two important 1970s horror films, George A. Romero’s The Crazies (1973) and David Cronenberg’s Shivers (1974), followed by a sixteen-month stint as the adulterer-heroine Sandra on NBC’s short-lived soap opera How to Survive a Marriage, as well as a brief appearance on the daytime serial Another World.
She also co-starred in Jonathan Demme’s vigilante thriller Fighting Mad with Peter Fonda (1976). Lowry also appeared as one of two female roles in Radley Metzger’s film Score (1974). As of 2007, she and Carl Parker were the only actors from the film who were still living.
Lowry came to Los Angeles in the early 1980s but gave up acting after appearing in Cat People (1982). “I was in Hollywood, and I just grew weary of the nonsense,” she explained. “When I was in Hollywood, I wasn’t doing horror movies; I was simply going out for TV and other auditions, and I got weary of it, so I quit; I focused on theater and even sang in a band.”
Splatter Disco, Basement Jack, and Schism are among her later films, which she co-wrote and co-produced. In addition, Lowry appeared in Dante Tomaselli’s Torture Chamber. She appears at the film’s twenty-fourth minute.
