Phelps began his broadcasting career in Akron on co-owned WAKR AM 1590 and WAKR-TV 23 as a sports reporter. He then had a five-year stint as a sportscaster on KJAC in Beaumont, Texas.

In 1988, on the 10 O’Clock News in Cleveland, Phelps became a sports reporter and weekend sports anchor for WUAB channel 43, as well as WOIO channel 19 after becoming the sister station of WUAB, eventually becoming the weekend sports anchor for both stations. In 1994, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) acknowledged Phelps for his job and named Ohio Sportscaster of the Year in 1994.

After moving to Fox Sports Ohio in 2003, Phelps became the pregame and postgame host for Cleveland Cavalier’s telecasts. He is also a play-by-play announcer on the network for high school football telecasts as well as the host/producer of the classic car-focused Cruise-In show. His responsibilities on Fox Sports Ohio have also included Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and Ohio State Buckeyes pregame and postgame shows at multiple points.
